A black bear who entered a kitchen through an open door in West Vancouver and took some food is marked for death by COS, says the North Shore Black Bear Society.
She was chased away, but a trap has been set and she will be killed, the society said.
It is believed she has two cubs of the year, and the intention is for the 5 month old cubs to be raised at Critter Care when caught.
On Saturday, a bear was killed in Deep Cove for entering an occupied home through a screen door and accessing food.
If you see a bear in a trap on the North Shore, please call the black bear society immediately so they can make extra efforts to connect with BCCOS.
“Never should a bear suffer in a baited metal trap, but in this heat it is inhumane and all we can do now is help to reduce the bear’s suffering,” the society said.
“Please reach out to us if you see a bear on the North Shore. Nobody has reported this West Vancouver family and the last report we received of a large bear in Deep Cove was in early May. According to BCCOS this bear had been very active in the area but they were also unaware.”
The trap for this black bear was set in all day deep shade. There is no way of knowing it was a female bear. It was not inhumane. The bear entered the trap during the night and was taken away immediately by 7 am. The bear did not seem to be suffering. It was not agitated as neighbourhood families gathered in interest, but docilely looking at those who gathered. BCCOS was considerate and helpful in all aspects. There is no reason to state this was the mother to the orphaned cubs, as NSN has previously reported that one suspected mother was killed on the Upper Levels Hwy and and another in West Vancouver. One applauds the Black Bear Society for their role in educating the public, but not in passing on mis-information.
