District of West Vancouver Council has endorsed the Joint Statement for Action on Floodplain Resilience in the Lower Mainland. Council decided during the Special Council Meeting on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026.
According to the report, Council directed that its endorsement be forwarded to the Lower Fraser Floodplains Coalition. The joint statement calls for collaboration among First Nations and local governments to support resilience in the Lower Fraser.
The statement identifies the Lower Fraser’s resilience as an urgent priority and calls for federal and provincial governments to address responsibilities related to critical infrastructure. It also calls for a sustained, long-term investment program for the Lower Fraser to support collaborative work among governments, First Nations and the private sector.
According to the report, the joint statement emphasizes that no single community can undertake the work alone and calls for federal and provincial governments to work with communities toward a safer and more resilient region.
