Two small fires near Sunset Beach are now under control after lightning strikes sparked the blazes Sunday, Aug. 23, according to the District of West Vancouver.

According to the news release, West Vancouver Fire and Rescue responded to reports of smoke in the area on Aug. 23 and alerted the BC Wildfire Service. Crews from both agencies coordinated the response, with efforts including helicopter and ground operations.

One of the fires was extinguished by West Vancouver Fire and Rescue crews, while BC Wildfire Service crews continued managing the second, according to the news release.

By Aug. 24 at 10 a.m., both fires were under control. The district thanked BC Wildfire Service and Metro Vancouver crews for their assistance, as well as members of the public who reported the fires. The district said there was no immediate threat to the public but asked people to avoid the area until further notice.
