The West Vancouver Police Department has introduced a Public Safety Trailer, a mobile monitoring unit designed to enhance public safety and deter criminal activity. Equipped with cameras, secure recording capabilities, and a sustainable fuel source, the unit will be strategically deployed in various locations based on community needs and evolving crime patterns.
“The ability to relocate this trailer in response to changing circumstances and public feedback provides an invaluable opportunity to prevent crime and maintain West Vancouver as a safe and vibrant community,” said Sgt. Arman Sardari.
Privacy Protections in Place
The WVPD emphasized that the Public Safety Trailer is not intended for active surveillance but rather as a deterrent to criminal activity. The unit records video only—without audio—and footage will only be reviewed or retained if required for a criminal investigation. All recorded data will be securely stored and not shared with external organizations, agencies, or institutions. The trailer will be marked as WVPD property, with safety cones and signage nearby. The department will also announce the trailer’s location on its website and social media platforms.
Funding and Support
The project was made possible through funding from the Province of British Columbia’s Special Investigations and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) initiative. The WVPD Investigative Support Team secured the funding to deploy this new crime prevention tool. “We are pleased to have yet another tool in our toolbox to help keep people safe and reduce crime in our community,” said Sgt. Sardari. “Without this specialized funding from SITE, this project would not have been possible.”
