West Vancouver Police Department officers stopped a sedan carrying two industrial-sized containers of vegetable oil strapped to its roof during a long-weekend enforcement blitz, according to the social media post by the WVPD.
The vehicle’s occupants were attempting to travel to the B.C. Interior with an improperly secured, overweight load when they were intercepted, according to the social media post. The vehicle was taken off the road, and the driver was issued a Notice and Order for non-compliance.
The stop was part of a joint traffic enforcement effort between WVPD and B.C. Highway Patrol, which extended from West Vancouver to Whistler over the August long weekend, running from Saturday, August 1 to Monday, August 3.
According to the social media post, drivers are legally obligated under the Motor Vehicle Act to ensure their vehicles do not exceed Gross Vehicle Weight maximums, that vehicle roofs can safely support any load, and that cargo is properly secured. Failure to comply can pose serious safety risks to other road users.
Enforcement over the long weekend resulted in 205 total violation tickets, including 63 for excessive speed. Officers also issued two immediate roadside prohibitions for drug or alcohol impairment, arrested one prohibited driver, and issued one Notice and Order for a non-compliant vehicle.
The WVPD’s Summer Safety Initiative will continue through August, with drivers reminded to observe posted speed limits, avoid impaired driving, and ensure vehicles and cargo meet safety regulations.
