The District emphasized that it does not issue parking tickets by text message. Parking tickets are issued only by placing them on vehicles or sending them by mail.
Residents are advised to watch for common warning signs of fraud, including links designed to steal personal or financial information and threatening or urgent language. If a mobile provider marks a message as spam, it should be deleted.
According to the news release, anyone who clicked the link or shared personal or financial information should consider filing a report with their local police department. They are also encouraged to contact Equifax Canada and TransUnion, and to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
