A Yellow Air Quality Warning remains in effect for the North Shore, according to the news release by Metro Vancouver.
Metro Vancouver issued the warning due to elevated fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone, with conditions expected to persist until there is a change in weather.
Elevated fine particulate matter is linked to smoke from wildfires burning in British Columbia, including in the South Cariboo, the Southern Interior and a complex of fires near Boston Bar. Ground-level ozone, commonly known as smog, is expected to reach elevated levels in eastern parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley this afternoon due to a mix of hot, sunny weather, local emissions and wildfire smoke, according to the news release. The release notes that smoke levels can change quickly depending on weather and fire behaviour.
Under the yellow warning, which indicates high health risk, residents are advised to limit outdoor activity and reduce the duration and intensity of activity.
The warning covers Metro Vancouver’s northwest area (Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, North Shore), northeast area (Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge) and southeast area (Surrey, Langley, White Rock), as well as the central Fraser Valley (Abbotsford, Mission).
